On Windows 7, there is the built in Sniping Tool. You can simply open your start menu and type in "sniping", and it will come up.

Sniping Tool has 4 different ways of capturing images:

  • Free-form Snip.
  • Rectangular Snip.
  • Window Snip.
  • Full-screen Snip

With the rectangular or window snip, you just choose your area, and it will only save what you select. You can also use it to save the image too from within sniping tool. It adds whatever you selected to the clipboard, easy for pasting it into skype or MSN. No more cutting up things in paint!

I like the Windows Sniping Tool. It's very handy for picking off those annoying mac-fanatics and linux-heads. DOMINATION! – music2myear Sep 1 '11 at 14:17

It's called Windows Snipping Tool.

  1. Open Snipping Tool
  2. Select area of screen you want to cap
  3. CTRL+V / paste into whatever app you want to paste it to.

Done.

Irfanview allows scripting and batch processing. As long as you're planning on cropping to the same part of the screen each time, this will at least automate this part of the process.
