I have a notebook that has a peculiar problem:

When I turn on the Notebook (HP Compaq nx8220) and and boot it (Win XP), it works fine. In case I keep the Notebook from booting properly by keeping it in BIOS or trying to install a different operating system, the Notebook turns off (instant power loss) within 30-60 seconds.

I thought the BIOS battery might be a problem so I replaced it, but it didn't work. Might anything be the issue that I can easily repair myself (meaning not having to replace the main unit)?

Have you tested booting to a live cd to see if that works or also shuts the computer down? – sbtkd85 Sep 7 '11 at 17:11
How does it behave if you boot into Windows XP's Safe Mode? – techie007 Sep 7 '11 at 17:54
I tried some things and it's been a while, I think I tested Live CDs, but I'm not sure anymore. I will test that again. Windows Safe Mode went normally, as soon as it booted up (and as long as it booted quickly) – private_meta Sep 8 '11 at 12:00
Sorry for taking so long to test this out, didn't find the time. I was able to start and install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. As the last time I tested it was a bit of time ago, I can't say with certainty if Linux was just "better" or if the problem fixed itself. After installing, the laptop showed the same problem at BIOS initialization, but leaving the laptop powerless and untouched for some time, it was able to boot again, meaning it showed a bit of the same problem, sooner, but was able to recover a bit. I will test BIOS itself (leaving it there for some time) and WIN Setup, but it may take a bit. – private_meta Sep 22 '11 at 8:41
Doesn't seem like anyone knows an answer :( – private_meta Feb 27 at 16:52
