I would like to learn to the smallest details how modern (x86) computer works.

Let say I have all resources, time, people, facotry - everything I need to build modern computer except knowledge. This computer would have MBO (with integrated network adapter and sound + USB & eSATA connectors), CPU, GPU, RAM and SSD (my plan is to outsource PSU to company XY).

Back to reality, I realize this is very large topic on which you could wrote a book as big as bible if not even bigger. So question would be, do you know any books, blogs, papers, forums, anything which would help me to better understand how does modern computer work?

P.S. I'm not interested in Turning or von Neumman concept. Just, modern, up-to-date hardware.

This question is way too broad, and your question as it is currently written has been answered elsewhere. If you just want to know how to build a computer, go to MaxiumuPC and read any one of their numerous build articles. – music2myear Sep 8 '11 at 18:28

@music2myear: From my understanding of the question, and my limited experience with MaximumPC, I cannot see how your comment will show him how to manufacture PCs 'from scratch'. That would just show how to assemble a computer out of component parts, which a 12 year old could do. – paradroid Sep 8 '11 at 18:37

If you are not asking how to assemble a computer from parts and instead want to learn how to build one from discrete electronic components you probably need to take an electronics course. One of my second year college projects was to assemble a computer from discrete components that with the exception of an Intel 8085 CPU and 8255 Interface controller. Those two were the only ICs, everything else was just transistors, resistors, capacitors, lights, switches. Once you learn the basics electonics, then everything else is scale. – Zoredache Sep 8 '11 at 18:43

BTW, at the discrete level, your may find more useful help over on electronics.stackexchange.com. The question as currently written would be closed over there as well though. It might be better to ask if anyone has a schemetics/suggestions to learn how computers work at a fundamental electronic level. – Zoredache Sep 8 '11 at 18:47
