I have a multi-page PDF and I wish to select a small region on one page and export this region as a new PDF. I am using Preview on Mac OSX. The in-built crop functionality doesn't work for me because the other pages aren't affected by this. My goal is to pull out an equation from one document and insert it into keynote as a PDF.

You will most probably need a "real" PDF editor for that, but on OS X, as far as I know, you're going to have to pay for this. – slhck Sep 18 '11 at 19:46
