I've been struggling to successfully use the new broadband to its fullest since I bought it two days ago.
- The setup - The 3G USB dongle is connected to my laptop running Ubuntu Natty. My roommate's laptop is connected to mine using a direct cat5 cable (with no router or switch in between). I tried this setup after trying an adhoc wireless network - which was slow and unsafe because I can't use WPA with adhoc - and after trying to connect us both to a router - which didn't work at all, since he could ping sites but couldn't open any.
Now everything seemed to work just fine, but he can no longer login to MSN using neither Live Messenger nor Trillian. I asked him what other apps could we test for connection other that the browser and WLM. I tested bittorrent and IVAC and both connected successfully to their respective servers.
He can login as usual if I connect the 3G dongle to his laptop.
I'm guessing that WLM and Trillian are trying to use some protocol to connect to MSN and my Ubuntu doesn't do it correctly. I'll continue googling similar problems, but it's hard to find results with decent relevance to this problem.
Kind regards.
Further notes: I disabled Windows Firewall and Nod32 on his PC, to no avail. I tested if he could login to MSN if I wasn't using MSN on my own laptop, and it didn't work either.
