Most wireless carriers allow you to send txt messages to phones via email. Or are you looking to do it directly over the net? In the latter you would need an snpp gateway. Carriers provide this but some charge (AT&T calls it enterprise paging) – Doon Sep 19 '11 at 0:07
Here's a list of all the big telco's SMS address format: sms411.net/how-to-send-email-to-a-phone – billc.cn Sep 19 '11 at 0:27
All the big telcos only in North America, that is. – William C Sep 19 '11 at 6:15
Directly over the net. I'm in Canada. But companies like Rogers requires that you have a cell with them to use that feature. – verve Sep 19 '11 at 14:21

I believe Skype supports SMS. You'll need Skype credit though.

I looked into it but it doesn't from Canada. – verve Sep 19 '11 at 14:29
@verve, they do now. – Synetech Feb 24 '12 at 19:16
I downloaded the software but how do I go about texting? I don't see anything within Gmail. – verve Feb 24 '12 at 22:43
@verve: There is no software. voice.google.com – SLaks Feb 24 '12 at 23:37
Don't I have to download the Google chat/video program? When I click your link @SLaks it goes to my Gmail account inbox. Where do I input a Canadian cell number to SMS? Also, how do I choose a number for me to text through? – verve Feb 25 '12 at 1:29

Finally, found the closest thing I've been looking for: joopz.com. Free 2-way texts from a PC to a cell in North America but international numbers can use the service too...hope someone finds it useful.
