My Toshiba Satellite laptop battery died a few months ago. However, I've been able to use the device as long as it's plugged into to the power cord. But over the last few days the computer won't boot up at all. I've taken the battery out several times and restarted several times. It will let me punch in the password (at login) but then takes forever to open to the desktop. That's as far as it gets. It won't open any program (Word, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc).

I ordered a replacement battery... but I'm beginning to wonder if the system is fried?

Sounds like it is infected, see my post here to disinfect...superuser.com/questions/100360/… – Moab Sep 21 '11 at 0:56
Please post your OS, after it is cleaned up you may have to fix a file association so your programs can run, the fix for this is OS specific. – Moab Sep 21 '11 at 0:57
