I have a Sony VAIO F11 running Windows 7 Ultimate. It's only a year old and I have been using an external PnP monitor through HDMI for as long as I've owned it. The monitor is a Hanns-G HH251 (25" 1920x1080 w/ 2 HDMI ports). I extend the laptop's display to the monitor and have both screens side by side.

Just recently I tried to connect the monitor and nothing happened. So I went to Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display\Screen Resolution, but the monitor did not show up (only the laptop's display). The monitor was not visible under the device manager either.

There were no software changes that seemed to have caused this so at first I thought it was a hardware problem.

Here's what I did:

  • I tested both HDMI ports on the external monitor. They worked fine.
  • I tested my HDMI cable. It worked fine.
  • I tested my laptops HDMI output to a different display. It worked fine.
  • I tried a different cable from my laptop to the Hanns-G monitor and it still didn't work.
  • I tested my laptop's VGA output to the Hanns-G monitor and it worked.

The fact that everything seemed to be working baffled me. As a last resort I did a clean install of Windows. The problem persisted. Now I'm stuck.

If anyone has suggestions on how I could fix this problem I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
