What webmail services do you know that can act as IMAP client (to be able to fetch email from other email services using IMAP protocol). And which you find the best one...

p.s. GMail is one, but it's currently down :o) , but its IMAP interface is supposed to be up, so i'd like to fetch mails to some other web client to be set up as backup client...

GMail isn't an IMAP client - the extra accounts only work via POP3 – Dan Walker Sep 1 '09 at 20:49
oh, thanks for the info, i assumed it was also an IMAP client being the IMAP server.... never checked it, though :) – zappan Sep 2 '09 at 23:12
It took me a few seconds to understand Dan's the extra accounts only work via POP3, so just in case people get confused: Gmail can be accessed using IMAP (though it's a bit of a hack as Gmail's labels cannot be 100.00% mapped to IMAP). But to have the Gmail web interface show other (non-Gmail) mail accounts as well, only POP is supported (see Mail Fetcher at mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=21288). – Arjan Sep 21 '09 at 12:30

For years now I have been using mail2web.com. I always click on "secure login", then "advanced login", then choose IMAP4. Crucially, it does support IMAP over SSL encryption; just check the "SSL" box.

hmm.. nice, looks promising.. will check it out, thanks – zappan Sep 3 '09 at 16:41

RoundCube is an excellent option. It's not a webmail service, but rather a web-based IMAP client that you install and configure on your own web server or on your webhost. Many hosting providers (BlueHost, Hostmonster, etc.) have an "simple-install" module for it.

And it works well with Gmail IMAP.

hm... actually, i was looking for some 'quick'n'dirty' solution for the GMail downtime, without the need to install anything... well, without installation to my desktop machine, actually, so this might serve as a good workaround if no true web baset IMAP client exists. thanks – zappan Sep 2 '09 at 23:14
roundcube is not easy to install at your own server, but if you got someplace that will install it with a script, nothing beats it down gmail downtime. – alpha1 Sep 3 '09 at 5:56

Roundcube is by far the best, atmail is pretty good too, but zimbra is the best if you need a server/interface all in 1.
