I have a single headset that I use constantly. My computer output jack is in an awkward location, so I've set up a simple audio splitter. One side is plugged in to my headset, the other side is plugged into an audio cable extender which I leave on my desk for when I want to use speakers etc. The headset also has a mic and output cable. The output side of the headset is plugged directly into the computer's input jack. See artful diagram below.

As far as I can tell, all should be working great - except it isn't. I constantly get the little popups from windows 7 saying "You just unplugged/plugged a device from/into the audio jack". This is incredibly annoying. Any ideas?

Is your Y adapter stereo - stereo, because they sell all sorts of Y adapts that can go stereo-mono and mono-mono. Is the Y adapter junk? because that is all they make anymore :-) You could try Deoxidising methods, to insure that the resistance isnt changing. depending on the "sence" type used in the hardware jack, minor changes in resistance could make it believe that it was or was not there. (does not apply to the "switch" type of jacks). we can clean any oxides off the Plug parts by just a paper towel (twist), or microfiber rag. the inside parts of a jack with a tech spray. – Psycogeek Sep 25 '11 at 12:37
it might be possible that the "open" connection point would trigger a sence, but it would also be relative to the Ohmies :-) of the headset that is pluged in. another "test" would be to use a "termination" of the open end. making a simple stereo plug with say 150Ohm resistance going from each "hot" to the ground. when you plug that in it would "terminate" the end of the wire, reduce interferances (from open), add in resistance, and finish it electrically "proper". ooooh proper :-) hey you just want it to work. – Psycogeek Sep 25 '11 at 12:45
