While I am very happy with MPD overall, the one problem I have is that it cannot play UDP streams. Since I have access to a wide array of local radio stations in UDP format, I would really like to know if any MPD alternative exists which can play these streams.

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for -

mplayer can play rtsp and other streams.
