I just bought a D-Link DIR-600 Wireless Router and was hoping to setup a VPN client using the DD-WRT firmware.

But unfortunately my hardware version of DIR-600, known as C1, is not supported by DD-WRT.

Is there another alternative?

Yes there is another solution, find out what dd-wrt will support and buy one of those. seriously that is what I had to do, turned out There are routers you can buy off the shelf that support VPN but you have to look for them. also it will matter what flavor of vpn you want, PPTP, OVPN,SSTP... you get the idea.
