I'm looking into migrating some newsletter-emailing from an off-site location to an in-house server. As a result I'm curious about what desktop solution would be best for bulk-mailing to email lists.

Important Factors:

  • The lists are in excess of 100,000 users
  • The emails will contain basic HTML
  • Low Cost / Free
  • Flexibility regarding Mail Servers

As Troggy / Diago closed my similar question - will the responders also try to explain anything that needs to be setup to ensure that the emails do not get bounced and do not look like spam and get your IP blacklisted. Things like RDNS etc. – Mr. Flibble Sep 11 '09 at 23:42

Fast Bulk Emailer is a free tool that allows you send emails in HTML or plain text to large lists of emails.

Any server with PHP should be capable, but you'd have to make sure your ISP isn't going to shut you down for looking like a botnet.

When considering your options you must consider the impact of successful email delivery. Major email providers (AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, etc) will block your messages if it seems like they have the faintest scent of spam. These providers do have whitelists (e.g. AOL's policies, Yahoo's), but I'd be wary of doing this myself.

There are some fairly inexpensive providers of bulk email services. The cost may be worthwhile if you're using their bandwidth and their services for ensuring delivery.

I listed some providers in my answer on a similar question.
