I'm looking for a router+modem that:

  • supports PPPoA & PPPoE
  • supports gigabit ethernet with at least 4 ports
  • supports wireless N & G
  • supports port forwarding
  • is both fast and reliable, and generally highly regarded by consumers

The following are also desirable, but not strictly required:

  • supports DD-WRT
  • is dual-band

I'm really struggling to track down such a beast. Are my requirements unrealistic in the current market, or am I missing something?

A router that meets most of your requirements would be a NETGEAR N750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router (WNDR4000):

It currently supports (assumes latest firmwar):

  • 4-port switch (integrated) - EN, Fast EN, Gigabit EN
  • Wireless: IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11n
  • PPPoA & PPPoE
  • Port forwarding
  • USB Sharing via dedicated port
  • Both private and guest wireless networks
  • Isolation modes

I have deloyed around 15 of these routers and they are stable and offer a host of features at a fair price point (prices range from $145.00 to $170.00 online).

I say most because fits most of your requirements SANS the DD-WRT. I can point you to this router from ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router:

This router does support all your requirments with a caveat. I can not vouch for how stable it is as I have never deployed one. I will be deploying one in 3 days so I will update this question with my opinion. The price point is far cheaper than they Netgear WNDR4000 at $80.00 most places online.

This is fantasically helpful - thanks very much. I look forward to your update in a few days and will investigate each of these further immediately. – Kent Boogaart Oct 8 '11 at 17:37
The ASUS looked the ticket but doesn't appear to support PPPoA. That's a shame, but it's pretty much what I've seen throughout my research. So close, but so far. Guess I'll look to go with the NETGEAR. – Kent Boogaart Oct 8 '11 at 17:47

No router/modem supports DD-WRT. If you want DD-WRT or any flavor of Tomato, you will have to add a router to your router/modem. For the rest Linksys will do.

What linksys? None of the ones I've seen support all my requirements. – Kent Boogaart Oct 8 '11 at 16:56
Also, your comment re adding a router to a router/modem makes no sense to me at all. If the unit is both a router and a modem, why would you need to add another router to it? – Kent Boogaart Oct 8 '11 at 17:04
"If you want DD-WRT" - that's the point. And it seemed to me that you wanted a combined router AND modem. DD-WRT does not support such a thing. You have looked at WAG320N and higher? – troels Oct 8 '11 at 20:31
