Is there any combination of hardware/software that will record widescreen TV (standard definition)?

I currently have a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 card and have been using Beyond TV for years (yes Iknow Snapstream is no longer updating Beyond TV).

The problem is that every recording I make is captured as if the picture is in a 4:3 screen. For a widescreen program (16:9), this means the image is reduced 75% (height and width) so that it fits into a 4:3 window. When played-back on a widescreen, this gives the recording a "postage-stamp" or "windowboxed" effect.

I am not looking to zoom the TV or the playback device (or stretch etc). I am looking for a way to record the program in its widescreen format and play it back the same way.

Any ideas?

Your question is vague. By "widescreen TV" content are you referring to high-definition programs from OTA or digital cable television? Or are you referring to analog cable content that was originally HD and is now letterboxed? – sawdust Oct 10 '11 at 20:44
