I tried Skype, but I couldn't get the webcam (standard Logitec model) to work with it (at all), even though it works in some random kde capture software. Are there any better alternatives?

I don't know if you'll be able to sign up for it since Google bought it but you can give Gizmo5 a try. It's free but not open source and can be downloaded from here. Edit: It would appear after doing some more digging that this isn't an option after the Google takeover.

I like Ekiga, but their SIP support has some deprecated ("don't do that anymore") functionality still in it and it can be a bear to get working. (I switched to Twinkle which is Qt-based, but hasn't seen an update in 2 years, and I don't know if it does video calls.) If gstreamer supports your video card (try Cheese), Ekiga should too.

Skype 2.x client for Linux supports video conferencing. Not sure why you have problems with it. Check the skype version. Gyachi is one alternative. It claims support for voice+video chat using a webcam. All you will need is a yahoo account. I have tried the voice chat and it works great.. Other alternatives are QNext, QuteCom (which was called OpenWengo previously)
