Ultimately this is the style that I would like to learn how to do:

http://www.picturelab.tv/

I have very little experience outside of basic video editing with free programs (e.g., Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, etc.). I'm looking for:

1) What type of software is required/recommended to accomplish something like the above group?

2) Any resources (blogs, tutorials, etc.) which could help me learn?

This is the site you may wish to visit,
related to 'stack exchange' and a good place to go to.
You will get good replies to your questions and general searches- eg.
Or there at SU., other than that,
Some basic background with related links (at the bottom)
Some 'how to's',
for the different designs and examples of what you may use.
Here are some links from blogs and forums.
I have not named any software as you will learn which is which form what the links use.
First off go free, if you can not do everything with it, you may have to learn some code.
Which is always good to know.
At , Graphic_design Stack_exchange type into the search box:-
'graphic tutorials' ,'free graphic software' and 'best graphic software'
Hope this helps, in some way.

Although not a basic piece of software, I would recommend looking in to Adobe After Effects for that sort of motion graphics and animation. You may also want to try Adobe Flash as it is very basic for animation and might get you into the idea of frame by frame stuff.

You can get a demo of after effects here.

There are literally hunderds of Motion Graphics tutorials online, just have a good google for "After Effects Motion Graphics Tutorials" I found a good post from smashingmagazine.com.
