Give me reasons, why I shouldn't do my own hosting.

Currently my blog is at HG, and I suffer from frequent outages such as slow server response, slow loading times, and generally sluggish performance of even static pages.

I've a home server running apache/mysql/php I use it mostly for development. It's not very powerful, runs on atom 1.8 dual core. With 2 gigs of ram and 1tb space. My internet connection is fiber optic line, some online test tools show as real speed: 5mps down, and 2mps up with 178ms (I'm located in Italy, tested against server in CA U.S. as majority of my visitors are from america).

So, what do you think,

Is this a viable option?

I imagine very few do this, but not considering issues like power backup, backup hardware and such, is it viable? will it be more responsive and faster than hostgator or any other shared hosting?

Thanks! s.

p.s. forgot to mention, my site has around 1200 visitors a day. Will atom be enough for that load?

As the close description says, your asking for opinions, it's in your title, Why should you do it? That's not what SU is for. We are not here to provide opinions or advice, we are here to answer real technical questions with real problems. The reason was given in the close notice. – Diago Oct 19 '11 at 16:22
