Running Windows XP pro, I have attempted to read an older internal HD via an usb interface and external power supply. The drive spins up and appears to run as it should. Windows recognizes the drive as an usb mass storage drive and also states that the new hardware is ready to be used. Problem is, the drive does not show in explorer or disk manager, no drive letter assigned but appears in 'safely remove usb device'.

Windows pnp is saying the drive is mounted, but it clearly is not mounting. I can access other drives through this interface so this is either a drive issue or a Windows xp pro issue. Is there any way I can read this drive? What are the possible causes and fixes for this?

Did you try hitting 'Refresh' in the disk manager? It should show up there, and getting it to show up there is the next step in getting it to work. – David Schwartz Oct 26 '11 at 1:10
