I'm looking for a HDDs to put in RAID5 in my trusty old Synology DS 508 instead of a set of failing ones.

It stores some important backups and other stuff I would like avoid losing. (I do have other backups, but this is the most convenient and frequently updated one.)

I need five HDDs, and, as per best practices, they must not be of the same model, so they would not fail all at once. (Actually, not of the same series, but I highly doubt that I would be able to filter by the series of the same model at the purchase.)

I decided on 2TB HDDs, as good quality 3TB ones are too expensive yet.

I like the WD RE4 model: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=30. It has RAFF (compensation for vibration) and TLER (RAID-specific error recovery).

But now I'm having a hard time picking a companion drive model (or two).

Any hints?

Shopping advice is off-topic for SU as per the FAQ. But, regardless of the drives you pick, buy them now if you can, as there's a HDD shortage under way... – techie007 Oct 27 '11 at 22:55

Why RAID 5 instead of RAID 1 or 1+0? – Luke Oct 27 '11 at 23:05
While I agree there is some logic to having drives from different manufactures, I am not sure it is wroth it. Generally I just make a point to have my backup drives, be from an alternate vendor. You ARE going to have a separate backup RIGHT?! – Zoredache Oct 28 '11 at 0:15
