I am thinking about buying some space in cloud for storing all my date. I would like a dropbox (software) type of functionality where you can easily upload/download files. Dropbox also proves sync functionality on different PC's which is nice.

Now the problem is many cloud system will give you 2GB or 5GB of free space, anything upward is $5/month or more. So I thought well I do have my own website, why not create a dropbox type of functionality on the server. I would like to know has anyone done a project that is successfully. I can probably code it from scratch but it would be nice if something is other there.

What I would like is create a folder like this www.mywebsite.com/myfiles. I go their it asks me for login and then I can view my files. This way hopefully I can uploaded files bigger than 2GB (depending on ISP) and have almost unlimited space. Has anyone had experience with such a try. DO you think it is worth buying space from cloud system rather than creating your own?

Thanks

An option not mention is the linked alternative is using the Opera Browser's United File sharing feature.

You can basically browse and share files hosted on your computer through a generated URL. Using the United File inbox allows you and others to upload files.
