I can't seem to figure how to clear the filter text in the Ubuntu file manager once I start typing a file name.

In more detail: In the Ubuntu File Manager, when you start typing a file name, a little filter box appears with the letters you type and the file matching this text is selected. The problem is that I can't find the keyboard shortcut to clear the filter box (if I make a typo, or want to find a different file). For some reason I can't understand, backspace doesn't delete the last letter, but instead takes me to the parent folder. It seems the filter box doesn't take precedence while it appears.

Is there anyway to configure this behavior, or is there a different key I can press to clear this filter box?
