I am trying to get an old computer running Vista to browse the internet faster. From the point of view that the resources on the computer are slowing things down.

Currently IE8 is installed and there is a Windows Update available to upgrade to IE9. The information on the update states that IE9 will run faster than IE8, but I'm worried that the computer doesn't have the resources to handle it.

Does anyone know if IE9 will actually run faster than IE8 on an older machine? To expand on the question would switching to, say, Chrome be a better choice?

Switching to Chrome / Firefox / Safari would be a better option, I'd say.

@lain its completely depend on the hardware if you give some specs. of your pc then its possible to tell. But according to me they will run fine on older pc. And Chrome is the best option. – avirk Nov 12 '11 at 1:43

Personally I'll suggest you to go with the Google Chrome. If you want to browse fast without any bug then this is the best choice. I personally get many error from IE9 when login to Gmail and redirected to other pages as well. Firstly I thought this the issue with my windows but after re-installing fresh copy of Windows 7 and upgrade to IE9 the same result were continue.

I'm continue with the Chrome Firefox and getting very good experience with them. You can check user review for IE9.

One of the best things about IE9 in my opinion is that you can uninstall it!

Why not just install it, see how things are then uninstall it if its significantly worse?

I'd expect things to 'feel' faster but who knows until you try...

Various performance boosts were boasted about with IE9 including greatly increased Javascript performance.. this is what you'll probably notice most.
