When I install Windows 7 on my Mac using the Bootcamp option, I am installing it directly on the hardware with the drivers provided by Apple. I'd do that for maximum performance.

But from what I understand VMWare Fusion can also run that same installation inside a virtual machine. But the VM hardware is different from the hardware on which Windows was installed. How does VMWare handle that?

How is the hardware "different"? I've got a Bootcamp partition with VMWare and you can use it as a VM or via Bootcamp without issue. – Tom Nov 15 '11 at 19:47
