I have some time data, about 30 tuples, each with about 30 attributes. Do the dates belong in the rows (with column headings being the attributes) or in the columns (with the rows being the attributes)?

It is your choice. Please read the faq. – Paul Nov 16 '11 at 20:14
Any part of the faq in particular? It seems to say that if I have a question about computer hardware or software, this is the place. Is there a separate faq on spreadsheet questions? – fatcat1111 Nov 16 '11 at 20:19
No, there's no separate on spreadsheet questions, but your question basically asks for opinion and does not have a definitive answer. There's no definitive standard here. Whatever you personally feel comfortable with is the way to go. – slhck Nov 16 '11 at 20:24
I see. I thought that there might be a de facto standard (e.g., what do engineers or accountants use). Thx. – fatcat1111 Nov 16 '11 at 21:01
Reminds me of the first time some business folks showed me a diagram with the axes reverted: Their independent variable is on the vertical axis. I couldn't read the thing at all. And my point is: Do whatever works for you, everyone else does too. – Daniel Beck Nov 16 '11 at 21:03
