What is the easiest and least obtrusive way to get Linux (not Cygwin) running as a virtual machine from within Windows? My other criteria are:

  • Won't cause any issues with my existing Windows 7 x64 installation.
  • Ideally free
  • Easy to install (including an actual Linux distribution)

I've read a little bit about coLinux and VirtualBox, but would like to hear from those with experience.

Voting to close as not constructive. All of the points you address are already covered with VirtualBox. It's free, does not interfere with Windows and is really easy to use. There's not much more to say. I'd suggest to just try it and see if it works for you, and if there's a problem, come back with a specific question. – slhck Nov 16 '11 at 20:38

Agreed. All of the responses you will get are merely opinion. Download one of those you listed and form an opinion of your own! :) – Garrett Nov 16 '11 at 20:40
Ok, well thanks @slhck for answering the question for me regardless. – glenviewjeff Nov 17 '11 at 5:03
