What do you really want to do? Please explain. Do you want to do a factory reset, i.e. set everything back to the way it was when you bought the laptop? In your title you said something about updating, what do you mean? Voting to close. – slhck Nov 25 '11 at 18:33

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. See the FAQ for guidance on how to improve it.

Assuming you're talking about resetting to factory defaults, you should really post this over at the Dell support forums but I'd suggest providing them a little more information so they have more to go on.

If you're talking about using System Restore within Windows XP to revert to an older state, then you need to do the following:

  1. Click on Start, go to Accessories, then System Tools and finally, click on System Restore.
  2. At the dialog box, select, Restore my computer to an earlier time and click Next.
  3. Select a system restore point using the calendar on the left and click Next.

It'll probably take a little while and then ask you to reboot the computer.
