I think that I know the answer to this question, but I am going to ask it anyway. I know what the benefits in speed are for devices that utilize the USB 3.0 spec. I know about its backward compatibility.

What I want to know is this: are there any common consumer-level devices that REQUIRE a USB 3.0 connection

In other words are there any usb 3.0 devices that when plugged into a usb 2.0 port will not work as intended or will not work at all.

why not? usb3 is not so expensive today and there are many devices that use just usb3 – Daniel Ruf Nov 29 '11 at 14:12
Consider an enterprise that would need to replace more than one computer... – Buggabill Nov 29 '11 at 14:34
Speed is the only benefit. – Casey Robinson Nov 29 '11 at 15:09
also usb3.0 is downwards compatible to 2.0 what do you need exactly? THERE is indeed hardware for normal consumers – Daniel Ruf Nov 29 '11 at 15:40

USB 3 is not required for this device. It will use it if it is available, though. From the data sheet: External interface: Micro USB3.0 (compatible to USB2.0 and USB1.x) – Buggabill Nov 29 '11 at 14:34
usb3.0 is indeed need for these drives but usb3.0 is downward compatible to usb2.0 see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB#USB_3.0 – Daniel Ruf Nov 29 '11 at 15:00
it was also just an example – Daniel Ruf Nov 29 '11 at 15:01
No. There are no devices that I know of that will fail to work if they are not plugged into a USB 3 port - including this one. – Buggabill Nov 29 '11 at 15:32
why should you want usb3 devices that dont work with usb2? they are downwards compatible to usb2.0 generally – Daniel Ruf Nov 29 '11 at 15:42
