Which Large File System Format to use for USB Flash drive compatible with Ubuntu/Mac/Windows?

I am trying to copy my data from Linux (Fedora ) to Windows OS? My 16 gb usb should be formatted in which format?

My file is around 12 GB that I need to copy in USB Flash Drive.

Then I have to run my program on Mac Computers which have Unix installed them.

The easiest solution would be to format the flash drive as FAT32 and use a cross platform spanning archiver such as 7-Zip to archive the file into 2GB chunks.

Fat32 is the 'universal' file system, but you won't be able to put single files larger than 4gb on it - in which case split zip files would help. – Journeyman Geek Dec 1 '11 at 7:23

NTFS is a safe choice. ExFAT might also be good.

Unfortunately my experience with Linux is limited to the fact that the two distros I use Ubuntu and Knoppix - both support it "out of the box".

Mac supports reading both, but I had to install NTFS-3g to also enable NTFS writing.

Might be a good idea to say where one can get the drivers for NTFS on Linux if he does not have them. – soandos Dec 1 '11 at 7:23
NTFS on linux is easy. Not that sure about ExFat - i seem to recall there's OS X support, but not sure with linux or older versions of windows – Journeyman Geek Dec 1 '11 at 7:24
