I installed KDE in Ubuntu 11.10, which in turn added lightgdm. I then decided I did not like lightdm and apt-get removed it (maybe purged? cannot remember). Now I cannot boot (stalls at Booting without network configuration), and cannot use apt-get from the root shell (recovery mode). What should I do?

The desktop manager is now gdm.

EDIT: I would also like to remove KDE, if possible, and alter the boot back to the regular Ubuntu boot.
