Perhaps what I'm after doesn't exist.

Is there a good remote desktop client for Linux that properly supports multiple monitors? I'm not talking about VNC, but Windows-style RDP.

I fired up Vinagre but there was no way to change it's default 800x600 resolution, let alone dual monitors. Remmina gave me custom resolutions but not dual specific monitors (the Windows RDP client, by comparison, will treat each monitor as a separate "virtual" monitor, so each can have a different horizontal and vertical resolution for example.)

Are there other alternatives I should try?

You could try with rdesktop -f youriphere but the last time I tried I just got a session that covered both screens, not the splitted/independent screens that we get on Windows RDP client.

Yes, that's what it still does. Same with xfreerdp as well. :( –  Joe Dec 3 '11 at 1:51

For a dirty solution, I recommend Ammyy Admin 3, if you can get it to run under Wine.

I was having the same problem with rdesktop. Basically full-screen will take up both screens and the default resolution is 800x600.

I found that you can change the resolution of rdesktop like so:

rdesktop -g 1280x1024 [machine]

And this way you can make it to the resolution of only ONE monitor. This has worked for me.

you can use x2go. its xforward via ssh over tcp. its like to be on your linux machine easy to install the server via x2go repos and the client via official tree. easy as breath to configure it the wiki has full support and the irc channel at freenode.

I know this is an old question (relatively), but the most advanced RDP solution for now is FreeRDP.
It supports everything (as far as I know) that the normal RDP does.

XRDP is another option that works well for me.
