Let's say one has a short micro USB cable. If one were to plug a cellphone into a computer, so that the cellphone was hanging down but not touching the ground, would this cause any damage to the USB port on the phone? I doubt there would be any damage right away, but repeatedly over a long period of time?

Easy answer - YES! No mobile adaptor port is designed to support more than just the cable. – HaydnWVN Dec 5 '11 at 12:22
