MagicDisc is an excellent tool for this.

MagicDisc is perfect for what you're suggesting. It will install a virtual drive, to which you can mount nearly any image format you can think of. Not to mention it's very transparent, requires no running processes in the background, and integrates directly with the shell if required...

The best of its kind is DAEMON Tools Lite.

EDit for first-time users : you can refuse the 2 adware offers, and it will still install and work fine.

I've stopped using Daemon Tools because every time Windows comes out with a new OS, the app stops working; it's always on the incompatibility list. Virtual Clone Drive worked even when Windows 7 was beta and there was no official support from the apps maker. – alex Sep 6 '09 at 6:49

I've had no problems with the DAEMON Tools latest version on both Vista and Windows 7. – harrymc Sep 6 '09 at 7:32

Try using Virtual Clone Drive. It does exactly what you need. From the site:

Virtual CloneDrive works and behaves just like a physical CD/DVD drive, however it exists only virtually. Image files generated with CloneDVD or CloneCD can be mounted onto a virtual drive from your hard-disk or from a network drive and used in the same manner as inserting them into a normal CD/DVD drive.

Probably the best virtual drive software, Virtual CloneDrive allows you to enjoy the freedom of a virtual drive and is completely free.

Also, here are some features:

  • Supports all common image formats such as ISO, BIN, CCD
  • Supports up to 8 virtual drives at the same time
  • Easy to use - just double-click an image file to mount as a drive
  • Virtual CloneDrive is freeware, you may use it at no cost.

There is a tool from Microsoft called "Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel". I must warn you though that it is very very not user friendly.

You are correct about it not being user friendly. – Chris Jan 13 '10 at 14:26

Alcohol 52% is free. It has a limitation on number of virtual drives, but I never needed more then one anyway.

WinCDEmu is a very simple yet handy one-click CD/DVD emulator for Win32/Win64 platforms. Supports ISO, CUE, IMG, BIN and RAW formats. WinCDEmu open source.

Pismo File Mount Audit Package allows you to mount the contents of ZIP, ISO, Compact ISO, Compact File Set and Private Folder files to the file system as virtual folders.

Through my years of XP I have found that these are the not only some of the easiest tools to use, but also the most stable. Not just through use of my own machine but through many client machines over various sites.

Both are free and regularly updated.

Maybe look at the Gizmo Central. It is freeware and includes also Gizmo Drive - a nice and handy tool to mount ISO-Files. The other tools (you can uninstall them) are also very nice.

7-Zip has the ability to extract the contents of an ISO file to a directory. For some uses (e.g. making application installers available over the network) this may be preferable to mounting the ISO file.

You can also use POWERISO, which will extract all the files from the .iso image to whichever directory you set up.

This way you don't have to run a virtual drive.

The trial version expires in 30 days.
