Our gaming clan is trying to find some free community forum software which we can use to socialse on. Currently, we've been using phpBB and that's totally fine.

Because we're leaving our current clan, we're looking to find some other solutions out there, both hosting AND software. If phpBB is the only thing, then we'll use it.

I'm also hoping that the forum software comes with OpenId out of the box.

So yeah .. we're not sure what to use AND where to host it. I understand that the hosting part of the problem will require $$$.

Can anyone help / make any suggestions?

Stay with phpBB. So far nothing beats phpBB in terms of customization. Once you get the grip and the rights mods, it can be even better that the commercial vBB. – Don Salva Sep 6 '09 at 13:06

not necessarily ...

Forumotion is a professional, easy to use, free forum hosting service. choose between PhpBB 2 and 3, Invision (IPB) and PunBB.

drawback: no OpenID logon as of yet

I'm a big fan of phpbb3, so this sounds like a good place. I've also checked out forumer.com as another option. It's just like Forumotion. – Pure.Krome Sep 6 '09 at 23:05
i'm aware of forumer.com but imho forumotion is the better 'deal' :) – Molly7244 Sep 7 '09 at 1:47

You could try phpBB's own new Forum Hosting Forumatic. They offer a free option for small comunities too. And unlike the proposed Forumotion or Forumer, Forumatic actually allows you to export your forum and move to a different host if you want. If you start on one of those free hosts and aren't happy anymore, you're stuck or you have to start over.

There are a billion threads on hosting, so I'll stay away from that, but tikiwiki is free, open source and has a ton of options. Tikiwiki 2.0 supports OpenID http://doc.tikiwiki.org/OpenID

It is a super package with everything you guys would want, discussion forums, wiki, blogs, etc.

You might have a look at Ning or Guild Portal.

Apologies though -- I missed the OpenID requirement. Didn't check with either of my suggestions to see if they support it. – Chris_K Sep 6 '09 at 4:52
