bear in mind that del.icio.us, for example, is actually icio.us. The del. is a subdomain, and making your name like that brings many more possibilities, and probably a lower price (because really, who'd link icio.us with del.icio.us without knowing it?) – Phoshi Sep 6 '09 at 12:36
If you go to del.icio.us, or icio.us, it redirects you to delicious.com – Mk12 Sep 6 '09 at 13:01

IIRC, they got icio.us first, and only after they became big, they were able to buy delicious.com – Vinko Vrsalovic Sep 6 '09 at 13:24
In fact, only after Yahoo bought them. – Josh Sep 7 '09 at 0:42

Domai.nr is a good way to look them up, but I think the high prices are set by the TLD Authorities and are pretty much all going to be the same no matter where you shop.

you are right. Asking price for one of the fancy domains I need is $250/year. – Quintin Par Sep 9 '09 at 13:33

try http://instantdomainsearch.com

They give Domain hack suggestions for every search you make.

If you do get a fancy domain (a domain hack as some call), make sure you also get the straight dot-com version. Even del.icio.us decided they needed to operate at delicious.com to minimize confusion among the general public.
