While watching video (vlc) on battery power, my screen had always blanked after 5 minutes. I have fixed this by executing "xset -dpms s off". However, unplugging/replugging my laptop always re-enables dpms. I can handle this problem myself, but I plan on installing Debian Wheezy on a friend's laptop too, and I would like a permanent solution for their sake.
KDE's Power Management does not have any effect in controlling this. Even with Screen Energy Savings ticked off, and setting the Profile Assignment to Performance in all scenarios, this continues to occur. Screen Saver is also turned off in System Settings. Creating a ~/.xinitrc file also does not work, as it is session-specific. KDE's Power Management has a setting to run a bash script after a minute of changing power profiles, but "xset -q" never shows changes after a minute.
