I've just installed Kile through synaptic package manager on Ubuntu 10.04, and I'm having some difficulties updating packages. Kile doesn't appear to have anything integrated for updating packages, and texlive is so horribly complicated I don't know where to begin. Given how easy it is to install new normal software packages on linux, and how well MikTex is with LaTeX packages on Windows, it seems to me that there ought to be some reasonable way to update my LaTeX packages in Ubuntu.

Is there any easy way to do this? I've tried a few of the more complicated ways and run into various errors. It would be great if someone has a solution that doesn't involve compiling 5 intermediate programs with CMake Version 2.584793 (build 18), updating 80 environment variables, and sprinkling fairy dust on my CPU.

The LaTeX integration on Ubuntu is "a bit" behind ... the easiest thing would be to install TeXlive 2011 directly (not the one which comes with the Ubuntu package manager, which is TeXlive 2009). – PaĆlo Ebermann Dec 13 '11 at 20:07
