I'm planning on buying a Dell XPS 15z laptop, ultimate one, which ships with a 256GB SSD instead of a 750GB HDD.

I just want to make sure if the price is worth it, as this upgrade adds $300 to the cost and shrinks space to one third. Any ideas which brand of SSD is shipped with it? and how much does it cost if I get it separately from its vendor and replace the HDD myself later?

Thanks in advance.

The SSD that comes with the Dell XPS 15z is a Samsung 470 Series (source).

This SSD is currently sold for USD 420,- at Amazon (link), so USD 300,- sounds more than reasonable for the upgrade.

As for if a SSD is worth it, that's totally subjective. SSDs make booting and starting applications a lot faster. Games also benefit from this. But if this is worth USD 300,- is ultimately up to you...

Personally, I would get the 750GB HDD and spend the difference on a SSD of your choice with an external enclosure for the 750GB drive. – kobaltz Dec 17 '11 at 22:21
