Every time my Gnome-Shell crashed I have to click the only "Log out" button, and then it restarted X so all my work is gone. Is there any way to ignore the black screen and restart gnome-shell without restart the whole X server?

I've tried Alt-F4, xkill, Ctrl-Alt-F* then kill, and some others but they are all of no use.

Any suggestions? Many thanks!
