I have heard rumors that running Windows Update in China may result in compromised patches being applied. Apparently, China forced Microsoft to disclose its signing certificate for updates and China also has significant control over its DNS servers, so they could redirect you to their own servers and apply their own compromised updates. Is there any proof of this ever having happened or is this just a crazy conspiracy theory?

What makes you think this? Rumors where? How would this even happen? If you edit your question to include more information about what the risk would be, we could possibly reopen it, but right now it's not a good question. – nhinkle Dec 20 '11 at 7:36

@Moab: Not running Windows Update is even riskier. (Assuming Windows is in use.) – grawity Dec 20 '11 at 23:43
