I'm using Windows XP and have VLC 1.1.11 installed. When I click its start menu icon, it needs 55 seconds (!) to show the GUI. I've cleared its settings, it asked me whether to check for updates and fetch information from the internet (which I unselected), but it still is so extremely slow. I don't have this problem with other applications. What could be the reason?

Maybe you could try to learn how to use Process Monitor : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645

It would give you lots of information, what you would want to isolate are the steps that take a long time, or if a repetitive task is seen (such as trying to access the filesystem or the network). Hopefully you'll be able to set up a filter to help you... That's a powerful software.
