I haven’t used my Windows 7 64-bit PC in six weeks. It runs a minimum of background processes and almost nothing at start-up. It has performed great for the year I’ve had it.

Yesterday morning, however, it started to have some issues. After booting it and logging in, the task bar and my two–three desktop icons are displayed. Then the desktop just sits there for 3–5 minutes. I can move the mouse, but I get no hover effects and clicks aren’t registered. Control-alt-delete does nothing.

This happens on every login after boot. As it is completely unresponsive, I’ve had no luck in identifying what process is causing the issue.

—any tips on troubleshooting while the system is completely unresponsive?

Does it boot into safe mode? Try making a new user profile and login to the new profile. If that is a success, we can narrow down the causes. – surfasb Dec 22 '11 at 21:04
