I'm in search of a free alternative to Itunes, something that A) plays music and B) syncs with iPods. Since iTunes no longer does either.

  • iTunes now freezes every time I launch it. Recreating the music library metadata file does't help. Reinstalling iTunes doesn't help, because the installer freezes at "validating packages".
  • Songbird gave up on iPods, farming out the functionality as an open source addon, which died.
  • Winamp for Mac only syncs with Android devices.
  • doubleTwist only syncs with Android devices.
  • Rockbox could be installed on an iPod, and music synced by drag&drop, but Rockbox doesn't support modern iPods (3G or higher).

"Songbird gave up on iPods, Rockbox doesn't support modern iPods, doubleTwist and Winamp only sync with Android devices". Cannot blame them, Apple is actively trying to make it hard for third-party software to talk to iPods. Welcome to the walled garden ;-) You most likely need to get iTunes fixed (or a new device). – Thilo Dec 23 '11 at 3:22
