I have a growing number of Blu-Ray discs from the United States as well as a fairly large collection of DVDs from the United States, Europe, and Japan. I would like to be able to play these on any machine I own, including my laptop when traveling. Presently, I am unable to do so due to the presence of region coding. My question is:

Does there exist an external USB Blu-Ray drive that can play Blu-Ray discs from region A and DVDs from arbitrary regions (or at least regions 1 and 2)?

I've done a fair amount of searching for something like this but haven't found up anything. If push comes to shove, I know I can just purchase two such drives and set the regions differently on each, but I would really prefer a single device because it would be more convenient for travel. Does anyone know something about this that I don't?

I don't know if a region-free Blu-Ray drive exists, but I can describe a different solution which would logistically accomplish what you are trying to do.

You could use a program like MakeMKV to copy the Blu-Ray to your hard disk and then stream the MKV file from the hard disk using VLC instead of a Blu-Ray drive. You may violate some trade agrements or other rules in your country though, so this may not be allowed depending upon the media and the country where you live.

As far as I know, there are no such drives.

However, there are programs (e. g. AnyDVD HD) to remove the region code restrictions on any drive.
