I have been looking for a convenient tool to help me build my knowledge-base for some time now. I have just discovered WikiPad and I am amazed.

The tool seems great but has one drawback - it is a single user application.

What I would want to know is if there is a free WikiPad-like multi-user application.

Ideally the application should:

  • allow creating a knowledge-base using simple wiki-like syntax,
  • comprise a light-weight notepad-y Windows/Linux editor, which would be run locally and store the data on a remote server machine,
  • allow concurent editing of pages (e.g. by tracking changes in the data files by a svn/git),
  • allow linking other files (also tracked by the svn/git) with the pages,
  • allow transforming the knowledge-base content into a HTML presentation.

Yes, hosting my own Wiki would probably be my second-best choice. What I would appreciate, though, is a light-weight desktop client for page editing. Editing inside a web-browser isn't my cup of tea. – Dušan Rychnovský Dec 31 '11 at 17:54

You should check out MediaWiki. It is a wikipedia like web application that will allow you to not only have multiple users access the site, but also allows external editors to manage the content of your wiki site.

MediaWiki 1.5 and later allows you to edit any resource using any external tool. This is accomplished using a very simple system:

When a resource is requested for being edited externally, MediaWiki sends out a control file that contains information about the resource; most importantly, its network location (URL) and the interface that is to be used for changing it. See Manual:External editors: control files for the specifications.

User browser has to be configured to call a special helper application (see below).

That helper application processes the control file, retrieves the resource, launches the favored application to edit it, and, if desired, saves the resource back to the server.
