I'm planning to build a "dumb disk enclosure" (ie containing just disks and power supply) for my home server. Both since I'm out of expansion space in my server case, and part because I need a new hobby project (the last part is sort of important, since it disqualifies the cheaper, easier solutions...).

My current plan is to have one of these on the enclosure side, and then this on the host side. So, the question: Will this work? :) I'm mainly asking since there seems to be quite few double ended SFF-8088 cables available, which suggests that this isn't the way it is usually done.

Also, I'm initially going to use a bunch of SATA disks I've got lying about, but this setup should be compatible with SAS disks if I should see a need for higher end disks in the future, right? And since there are no controllers or logic anywhere in this, the performance of my storage should only be limited by the performance of the disks and controllers, correct?

Do you see any other problems with this?

I don't see why this is "not constructive"? I feel I'm asking a fairly specific question, "will this hardware setup work?". Is it the last paragraph? – carlpett Jan 2 at 18:14
