Is there a way to change the DNS settings for an iPhone connected via a cell network? I suspect that my cell carrier's DNS servers are flaky and I'd like to see if OpenDNS will improve things.

For Wi-Fi, it's easy, you can just simply update your iPhone to use the OpenDNS DNS servers... But as the first author (tnorthcutt) mentions, it appears for the Cell network, that AT&T is hard coded...

You actually would need a jailbreaked iPhone or the ability to somehow change a few files in the /etc/ directory....

Not something that I would recommend for just attempting to get better DNS speed... I generally haven't seen a hugh slowdown with the AT&T DNS performance... But neither have I been able to realistically benchmark it...

This page appears to have instructions for this. There's also a blog entry from January of 2007 on the OpenDNS site about the iPhone, but there doesn't appear to be a follow up.

There was a app called NetInfo for iPhoneOS 2.x which did this job, but it does not exist for OS 3.0. Maybe there will be an update...
