I have an Excel file featuring a pivot table. For reference, the file was made in Excel 2003, but I am running 2010. The file has to continue to be compatible with Excel 2003.

Because I cannot think of any way of explaining without resorting to images, here is a simplification of what it looks like, deidentified:

Pivot screenshot

In the above image, I am trying to sort and filter (using the "Top 10" feature) by Client1's Rate. Sorting is disguised but not impossible:

  • Click the "Option" arrow beside "Group"
  • Pick "More sort options"
  • Select "Rate" from the drop down
  • Click "More Options"
  • Manually change the "Values in selected column" to $C$n (Client1's column) instead of what it defaults to (the "Grand Total" column)

The problem is, I cannot find any way to filter by Client1's values. I only need the four groups with the highest rate; so in the example, Group2 should be being filtered out. But all attempts to filter I've made seem to use the Grand Total column with no way to change it.

Is this possible? What do I need to do to make it work?
