My computer is currently running an activated german version of windows 7 home premium, I have downloaded an unactivated version of windows 7 home premium in english. if I do a clean install and enter the serial key from the german version will it work?

As far as i'm aware OEM versions are locked to language, i'm 99% sure this would also apply to product keys. Only Windows 7 Ultimate isn't locked to language - you can actually swap languages on the fly!
