I was wondering if you could give me some pointers on securing my home web server. I am going to use it to play around with java servlets to start with, but I may look at putting more stuff on there as time goes on e.g. a full Apache server rather than just TomCat.

My setup is as follows

  • Windows 7 - 32 Bit
  • McAfee Virus Checker and Firewall (these are both up to date)
  • TomCat Webserver (latest version)
  • Netgear Router with port forwarding for 8080 to the ip address of the server

At the moment I have only put it online for 5 minutes to make sure it works, which it does.

I need to continue to use Windows so a different OS is not an option but apart from that I am open to any additional security software you would recommend or changes to the configuration e.g. ports, firewall, router etc.

Thanks
